Behind the Scenes: June ‘25
The summer holidays are inching closer: that means Atlantis has been buzzing with training, teamwork, and some top-tier community collaborations. Here’s a look behind the scenes at what’s been happening this month at your community-run leisure centre:
Staff News - ‘the team behind the action’
A huge congratulations to our latest group of lifeguards, who have successfully passed their PLG (Pool Lifeguard) Renewal exams, securing another two years of certification. This qualification is a crucial part of keeping Atlantis a safe space for everyone who uses our pool. The renewal process is no walk in the park! - to pass, candidates must complete a demanding three-part assessment:
Practical Skills Test – Demonstrating real-time lifesaving techniques including CPR, first aid, and a range of pool rescue scenarios.
Theoretical Questions – Answering detailed questions around responsibilities, risk management, and emergency protocols.
Fitness Test – Typically a timed swim and deep-water retrieval, ensuring lifeguards can respond quickly and effectively when it matters most.
Passing this exam reflects not just physical capability, but also a deep understanding of the role and a high level of responsibility. We’re proud of every team member who took part: their professionalism, focus, and commitment play a huge part in keeping Atlantis safe, welcoming, and ready for anything. Well done, team!
Gymnastics - ‘flippin’ good!’
Atlantis recently welcomed Scottish Gymnastics to deliver our second CPD (Continuing Professional Development) session since becoming an affiliated centre. These sessions are essential in keeping our coaches at the forefront of best practice, allowing them to refine their techniques and bring fresh energy to our classes. It’s clearly paying off! - our weekly Gymnastics programme continues to grow in popularity, and our Summer Gymnastics Camps are already in high demand. We’re proud to support an environment where our coaches and participants continue to thrive together.
Future Friday - ‘Fridays that look beyond the weekend’
Every year, Atlantis plays host to Future Friday, our flagship P7 transition programme for year groups leaving primary school and progressing up to secondary. Each week in May, over 100 Primary 7s joined us for Friday night sessions designed to ease their leap up to Oban High School. This year, we took things up a level by partnering with brilliant local groups to enrich the experience including RookHart Games, Oban Table-Top Gamers, Retro Video Games Night & Oban District Darts Youth Academy. Future Friday is all about making connections, building confidence, and creating fun, positive memories ahead of a big change — and we’re thrilled to see it grow every year.
Centre Life - ‘know your building’
It’s a quick facilities update for you this month and a bit of bad news at that: we’ve been experiencing an ongoing leak in the main Sports Hall. The knock-on effect of the leak has caused disruption to some of our regular football bookings. We're currently waiting on a specialist company to carry out the repair and, while it’s frustrating, we appreciate everyone’s patience and flexibility in the meantime. Fingers crossed for a fix very soon! – we’ll keep you up to date.
