And off into another year we go! It always feels good to get back into rhythm after the holidays and this year is no different. In fact, after the uncertainty caused by the reintroduction of some Covid-19 restrictions before Christmas, the reduction of these is firing the Atlantis team up even more.

Read on to find out what’s been happening at the Centre as we kick off 2022::

Covid-19 Restrictions Ease – ’normal service resumes’

Following the return of certain restrictions as part of the response to the Omicron Covid-19 variant, the government have this month announced the easing of some of these. This is great news for Atlantis as the restrictions had a significant impact on the way our activities could run. The easing means we can revert to 1m social distancing which allows us to go back to normal capacity within the Gym, return Fitness classes back to their home in the Dance Studio and welcome back contact sports. All in all: good progress!

Centre Life - ’new covers please!’

A few editions ago, we told you that our pool covers were due to be replaced – that time has come! The pool covers do an amazing job keeping the heat in the pools overnight. This makes them a vital tool in helping us reduce our environmental impact by keeping the amount of energy we use to a minimum. Over time, the covers lose their efficiency and new technologies evolve. So, this month’s installation of brand new covers for both pools is a big positive step towards Atlantis realising the environmental goals we’ve set.

We also previously told you about an upcoming Gym equipment upgrade – its time has come too! New pieces of equipment started arriving this month due to be installed in the coming weeks. The newly upgraded Gym will be ready for action by the end of February.

Atlantis in the Community – ‘making a difference beyond the Centre’

Five of the Atlantis team joined a cohort of colleagues from across the Highlands to start a 6 day Leadership Training course with the Social Enterprise Academy this month. Atlantis is acting as an anchor organisation for this edition, funding the training for others joining from Oban Phoenix Cinema, Hope to Oban, Healthy Options and the community-run Mallaig Pool and Leisure Centre. Atlantis have worked closely with the Social Enterprise Academy for many years with numerous past and present members of the team able to testify to the enduring impact attending their courses can have.

Staff News – ‘the team behind the action’

We welcomed a new member of staff to the team this month.  Lora MacLeod joined our leisure attendant and reception team, helping to cope with the increasing workload as we continue to implement our Covid recovery plan.

In addition to our Social Enterprise Academy course, training continues elsewhere too. Claire and Cameron completed their Level 3 Gym Instructor certificates this month while we also confirmed a new pool lifeguard course to help continue the upskilling of the whole team’s lifesaving expertise.
