McFunk Dance Party Fundraiser - Save your Play Park

McFunk Dance Party Fundraiser - Save your Play Park Taking up the fundraising baton for the community play park outside Atlantis, are a few dance fans who are inviting you to join them for the McFunk Dance Party. The event will be held on Saturday 3rd December at Atlantis Leisure. If you're wondering what McFunk is, its a Zumba contemporary Highland dance mash-up, brought to you by Zumba Instructor Larni Wright and Highland Dance Teacher Adele Askew (also know as Mrs Gillies to the kids at Rockfield).

The first hour of the party is for kids 5 and up, with Zumbatomic dances and other stomping tracks. The second part is for adults, with some Zumba favourites and numbers from Lady Gaga, the Peatbog Faeries and other surprises. There will be supervised soft-play during the adult session so that the wee ones can be looked after while the big ones party on. There will be prizes for best dressed, raffles and as much nonsense as can be arranged between now and then!

Places will be limited, so please book your place early. Contact Atlantis reception and pay £3.50 per adult/child per hour, plus £3.50 for the supervised soft play session. Sponsorship forms will be available and you are encouraged to raise as much as possible for the play-park.

Currently there is about £8000 in the play-park fund, with an initial target of £20,000. The current play park has been well used over its 15 plus years and will be due for a full refurbishment within 2 years or so - plenty of time to get a chunky amount of money together to demonstrate to grant providers that the community are serious about securing a top quality new play park, which for argument would cost anywhere between £80,000 and £100,000 .

Evolve success - Laurie's story

I have struggled with my weight since the birth of my son in 2003. I have tried various diets and spent a fortune on them. They did not work as I felt that I didn't have the willpower to follow them or I would go over my allowance each day and then think 'I've blown it', and stuff my face with whatever came to hand first!

On starting in Atlantis in February this year I felt that it was really time I did something about my weight and fitness. I start off slowly with exercise and I gradually noticed that my fitness levels were improving. I started to play squash with a friend in May and that’s when I really noticed a huge difference in my fitness levels but there was no difference in my weight which was disappointing to me.

I started to speak to Anthony about it and after him asking me various questions it soon became apparent that I was insulin resistant and that I could do all the exercise in the world but it would not make a blind bit of difference until I got my insulin under control. I constantly had sugar cravings and they made me feel awful. He explained to me about Evolve and how it was not a diet - it was all about your mind and low GL foods. Evolve is all about eating healthy and not feeling guilty about eating, foods are not classed at sins. Its all about moderation especially sugar which was my biggest downfall.

I am currently half way through week 4 at Evolve and I am feeling so much better, I have lots more energy, I sleep better at night, I don’t go hungry and most off all I don’t get the horrible sugar cravings!!!! It took a couple of weeks for me to actually feel a difference but now I do I never want to go back!!

I would recommend Evolve to anyone - its great, and best of all I still have my chocolate and I don’t feel guilty about it.

The next 8 week Evolve block will be starting on the 9th of January. For more information contact our reception.

Fire Service Swimming Championships Success

Local Fire Fighter, Allan Robinson, recently returned from a swimming competition with an impressive haul of medals. Allan, along with valuable input from Otters coach Gillian Gibson, also coaches our Monday night Master's Sessions.

Allan was one of a team of nine from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue who attended the Fire Service Sports & Athletics Association Inter-Brigade Swimming Championships held earlier this month at R.A.F. Cromwell in Lincolnshire. The competition consisted of 17 teams from Brigades around the UK. Allan's medals included an individual silver in the 50m backstroke, a bronze in the 100m individual medley, and also a silver and bronze in the team events. He attributes his success to the hard training at the Monday sessions, as well as the extra hours he has carried out in the pool in his own time. He would like to invite other like-minded people to give the Masters sessions a try.
