No, the person next to Nick Wesley in the Oban Times last week wasn't his twin George Weasley, it was marketing sub-group member Roger Elliott. Responsible for introducing the Atlantis Facebook page and the weekly newsletter, Roger is continuing to apply his marketing skills to support his second home, Atlantis Leisure.
His 2 girls are there 4 days a week, and are super excited about the new softplay and Climb Cube. Roger says "Having grown up in Troon I had low expectations of local sports facilities, so I was blown away by the quality and quantity of activities offered by Atlantis. I figure that I'll continue to spend a lot of time here as my family grows up, and I want to help where I can to keep this community facility going strong".
Roger has been co-opted to join the Atlantis board of directors later in the year.
Over the past 5 years, Hope 2 Oban has held the Lock-in event at Atlantis Leisure, The Lock is for high-school 1st years and offers a great way to build up positive friendships aswell as many other positive things. The young people arrive at atlantis at 9.30pm and doors are locked untill 8am the next day which means they have over 10 hours of activities through the night taking part in swimming, lacrosse, badminton, football,Tennis, tiddly-winks, Nintendo wii games, squash-cinema, sleeping, Arts & Crafts and much more. In addition to the more obvious opportunities for these young folks to benefit physically, they have experienced a glimpse of community living where focussed social interaction is very different to that of the every day. They have had the opportunity to make choices from an array of "active" and indeed "non-active" possibilities. "Do I go crazy in the sports hall and pool all night or chill with my pals?", "Do I do what I know and enjoy or do I try new things?".
The benefits of partnership working have added to the value of the event, both for the young folks, H2O workers and volunteers along with the partners. Oban Youth Cafe, the SSC, Community Police, the Community Support team and the team members from Atlantis Leisure have been some of the groups who have considered this as an extremely worthwhile town-wide event.
Tracey Campbell Tracey has been a member at the Atlantis gym for a couple of years.
Last year she joined Jog Scotland and went from being a non runner to running 15 miles per week and is training for a half marathon this year with the help and support of the Atlantis team.
She is receiving dietary advice from the Evolve programme and is feeling the benefits of a healthier diet.
In the gym she receives help and encouragement from AK and the rest of the gym team. Tracey feels that she makes full use of the classes and facilities making her membership great value for money.
Tracey says she feels that there have been many benefits of regular exercise - her body has changed shape, her mood has lifted and she has a much wider social circle
